Connecting your charger to mesh WiFi

How to connect your Evnex charger if you have an Orbi, eero, Google Nest, or TP-Link Deco mesh WiFi system

Evnex chargers connect to WiFi on the 2.4 GHz band only. Most mesh WiFi systems combine their 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands under a single network name and decide which band each device uses, which can occasionally make it harder for the charger to join or stay connected.

The good news: every major mesh system has a reliable way through. Find your system below and follow the steps.

📘

Not sure if you have mesh WiFi?

Mesh systems use two or more identical units placed around your home instead of a single router. If your WiFi is managed entirely from an app (eero, Google Home, Deco, or Orbi), you likely have a mesh system.

Try the normal setup first

Many mesh networks work with your charger without any changes. Only follow the steps below if the charger won't connect, or keeps dropping offline.

TP-Link Deco

Deco has a built-in IoT network feature, which creates a separate WiFi name just for smart devices. This is the most reliable option.

  1. Open the Deco app and go to More > IoT Network.
  2. Turn the IoT network on, give it a name and password, and set it to 2.4 GHz only.
  3. Connect your charger to this new network name during setup.

If the charger connects but keeps dropping offline afterwards:

  1. In the Deco app, go to More > Advanced and turn off Fast Roaming and Beamforming. Some smart devices, including EV chargers, don't support these features.

eero

eero doesn't allow a permanent separate 2.4 GHz network, but it has a button designed for exactly this situation.

  1. Open the eero app and go to Settings > Troubleshooting > My device won't connect.
  2. Tap Temporarily pause 5 GHz. Your network will broadcast on 2.4 GHz only for about 10 minutes.
  3. Connect your charger during this window. Once it has joined, it stays on 2.4 GHz even after the pause ends.
🚧

Charger can see the network but won't join?

WPA3 security is the usual cause. In the eero app, go to Settings > eero Labs and turn WPA3 off, then try again.

Netgear Orbi

The steps depend on how new your Orbi system is.

Newer Orbi systems (WiFi 6E and WiFi 7)

These include a dedicated IoT network you can set to 2.4 GHz only.

  1. On a device connected to your WiFi, browse to orbilogin.com and sign in with your router admin password (this is different from your WiFi password).
  2. Select Wireless. Under Wireless IoT Settings, tick Enable IoT Network and give it a name and password.
  3. Set the IoT network band to 2.4GHz only and click Apply.
  4. Connect your charger to the new IoT network name.

Older Orbi systems

Older Orbi models can't separate their bands. Try connecting the charger to your normal network first; it works in most homes. If it won't connect or won't stay online, skip ahead to If it still won't connect below, or get in touch with our support team.

Google Nest Wifi / Google Wifi

Google's mesh systems don't offer any band controls, but two things are still worth checking.

  1. Try the normal setup first. Nest automatically steers 2.4 GHz-only devices to the right band, and this works for most chargers.
  2. If the charger won't join, turn off WPA3. Open the Google Home app, go to your WiFi network's settings, and turn off WPA3. Google notes this security mode can block devices that only support 2.4 GHz.
  3. Check the signal where your charger is. Garages and outdoor switchboards are often at the edge of WiFi range. If other devices also struggle near the charger, moving a Nest point closer (or adding one) fixes the root cause.

If none of this works, the options below will.

If it still won't connect

These options work with any WiFi system:

  • Use the built-in 4G connection. Chargers with cellular support can connect over 4G instead of WiFi. Contact our support team and we'll help you get it activated.
  • Add a small 2.4 GHz access point. An inexpensive access point wired into your network, broadcasting its own 2.4 GHz network for the charger, is a permanent fix for stubborn setups. Your electrician can help with this.
❗️

A phone hotspot is not a permanent fix

Connecting your charger to a phone hotspot works only while that phone is at home and the hotspot is on. The moment the phone leaves, your charger goes offline and stops receiving updates and schedules. If your charger was set up on a hotspot, please reconnect it to your home WiFi or get in touch so we can help.
