Connecting your charger to Starlink WiFi
How to connect your Evnex charger if your home internet runs on a Starlink router
Evnex chargers connect to WiFi on the 2.4 GHz band only. By default, Starlink broadcasts its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands under a single network name and decides which band each device uses. Devices that can only use 2.4 GHz sometimes can't join a combined network like this, or join and then drop out.
Starlink has a built-in setting that fixes this. Splitting the bands gives you two separate network names, and your charger connects to the 2.4 GHz one.
Try the normal setup firstPlenty of Starlink homes connect the charger with no changes at all. Only follow the steps below if the charger won't connect, if your Starlink network doesn't appear in the list during setup, or if the charger keeps dropping offline.
Using a separate router or mesh system with your Starlink? If your WiFi comes from your own router or a mesh system (eero, Deco, Orbi, Google Nest) plugged into the Starlink, change the settings on that device instead, not in the Starlink app. See Connecting your charger to mesh WiFi.
Split your Starlink WiFi into two networks
- Open the Starlink app on a phone connected to your Starlink WiFi.
- Go to Settings, then tap your network name.
- Turn on Split 2.4/5 GHz networks.
- Give each network a name you'll recognise later, for example Home_2.4 and Home_5. Using the same password for both makes life easier.
- Save your changes.
You'll now see two WiFi networks in your home. Use the 2.4 GHz one for the charger, and the 5 GHz one for phones, laptops and TVs.
Everything will drop off WiFi for a momentSplitting the bands restarts your WiFi. All your devices will disconnect briefly and some will need reconnecting to the new network names. It's worth doing this at a quiet time rather than mid-movie.
If you can't find the split option
- Check your Starlink app is up to date. The setting sits under your network name, not on the main Settings page.
- Check whether Bypass Mode is on. Bypass Mode turns off the Starlink router's own WiFi so another router can take over. When it's on, the WiFi settings in the Starlink app are unavailable, and you'll need to split the bands on your own router instead.
- Older hardware or firmware may not offer the setting at all. If it isn't there, the options further down this page will still get your charger online.
Connecting the charger after splitting
- In the Evnex app, go through the WiFi setup step as normal.
- When you're asked to choose a network, pick your 2.4 GHz network (for example, Home_2.4).
- Enter the password for that network and continue.
Already had the charger connected before you split the bands? The old network name no longer exists, so your charger will show as offline until you reconnect it. Run through the WiFi setup again and choose your new 2.4 GHz network.
If it still won't connect
Starlink routers usually sit wherever the cable comes into the house, which is often a long way from a garage or an outdoor switchboard. If other devices are also weak near your charger, distance is the likely cause rather than the band.
- Move the Starlink router, or add a Starlink mesh node closer to the charger. Keep it upright, out of cupboards, and off the floor.
- Add a small 2.4 GHz access point. An inexpensive access point wired into your network, broadcasting its own 2.4 GHz network for the charger, is a permanent fix for stubborn setups. Your electrician can help with this.
- Use the built-in 4G connection. Chargers with cellular support can connect over 4G instead of WiFi. Contact our support team and we'll help you get it activated. Worth noting that many Starlink homes are rural, so it's best to check you have reasonable mobile coverage at the property first.
A phone hotspot is not a permanent fixConnecting your charger to a phone hotspot works only while that phone is at home and the hotspot is on. The moment the phone leaves, your charger goes offline and stops receiving updates and schedules. If your charger was set up on a hotspot, please reconnect it to your home WiFi or get in touch so we can help.
